FHS GETS KEY HITS, STRONG PITCHING IN WIN

FAYETTEVILLE -- Thomas Broyles and the Fayetteville offense came alive just in time Monday. And when the Purple Bulldogs finally found their bats, they didn't stop as a flurry of two-out scoring led to a 6-1 victory against Rogers Heritage in 7A-West Conference action at Bulldog Field. After Rogers Heritage finally broke open a pitcher's duel between Fayetteville starter Joey Savin and War Eagles' hurler Logan Easley with an unearned run in the top of the fifth, the Purple'Dogs responded right back in the bottom of the fifth. And Broyles provided the biggest knock, starting the rally with a two-out single to right to tie the game at 1-1 and get the floodgates rolling. Braden Jordan, Hayes Cox and Barrett Banister would all follow Broyles with two-out base hits, as Fayetteville (14-9, 6-3 7A-West) quickly turned a 1-0 deficit in the fifth into a 4-1 lead. "For some reason we have a knack for letting the other team score first," Fayetteville coach Scott Gallagher said. "I look up there in the fifth inning, and both pitchers are around 50 pitches and throwing well. But we put together a couple of big two-out hits there. "Thomas had a big hit there, and a couple of other guys got some more two-out hits, and then we tack on two more insurance runs in the next inning, and Joey (Savin) kept throwing the ball really well." While Fayetteville was finally able to break through against Easley in the fifth inning, Heritage could never capitalize against Savin. The War Eagles had their chances, though. Rogers Heritage (7-13, 2-7) finished just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left nine runners on base, as Savin worked around trouble in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings, allowing just one unearned run on five hits, with two walks and 11 strikeouts. "We've got to do a better job with the bat," War Eagles coach Mitch Cameron said. "Hats off to (Savin), he did a great job of mixing it up and changing it up, and he threw strikes. "But we're in the position where we are, and these kids got to fight and find a way to get a win." Broyles, Jordan and Robbie Briggs led Fayetteville with two hits each Monday. Easley was 2 for 3 with one RBI for Rogers Heritage. The two teams play again at 4:30 p.m. today at Veterans Park in Rogers.
