FAYETTEVILLE PILES UP POINTS

FAYETTEVILLE -- Fayetteville was hitting on all cylinders right from the start Friday against overmatched Lawton (Okla.) Eisenhower. The Bulldogs (1-0) set the tone with defense -- forcing a fumble on the second play from scrimmage -- then showcased a high-power, up-tempo offensive attack the rest of the way. Fayetteville scored eight touchdowns in eight possessions before halftime, piling up quick points and big yards in a 58-6 mercy-rule victory against Eisenhower at Harmon Stadium. "The first game, usually, there's a lot of things to clean up, but I'm really proud of our kids," Fayetteville Coach Daryl Patton said. "Overall there's not a lot of things that were just sloppy or bad. "For a first game, it was a great opening game for the season. Our kids were excited to play somebody else and (Lawton Eisenhower) is a good team. We just had them overmatched, but they're going to win some games this year." Fayetteville played without senior wide receiver Tyson Morris (foot) on Friday, but still had more than enough to overpower Eisenhower. Junior quarterback Taylor Powell completed 15 of 19 passes for 216 yards with four touchdowns in two quarters of action, throwing to seven different teammates for receptions. Garland Allison led the Bulldogs' receivers with four receptions for 59 yards and a TD, with Barrett Banister adding four catches for 54 yards and a TD. "We've been working hard all summer and it just came together," Allison said. "We've got a lot of unselfish guys and we just came out tonight and we were ready to unleash it. Everybody touched the ball, everybody helped out and did their part, and when that happens the results are really good." As explosive as Fayetteville's offense was, the defense was just as stingy. Lawton Eisenhower (0-1) was held to 250 yards Friday and crossed midfield just four times. "Our defense sometimes gets overlooked, but they played well," Patton said. "The defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage, the linebackers and secondary played well. And to come out and get us the ball right off the bat for that easy score, that was huge." Fayetteville visits North Little Rock on Friday.
