With less than three weeks until the Class 7A state meet, Jasmine Franklin clearly has a girls shot put record in her sights.

The Fayetteville junior not only smashed the Bulldog Relays record that she already owned, but she put the state Class 7A state record within striking distance with her performance during Friday's meet at Ramay Junior High. Franklin had a winning toss of 43 feet, 3 inches, surpassing the 41-11.25 mark she threw last year.

Franklin's toss is just 5 inches away from the Class 7A state mark of 43-8 set by Texarkana's Roshendeda Ross in 1991 and 9.5 inches from the state overall mark of 44-0.25 set by Rogers High's Heather Lakey in 1997. State records, however, can only be set during state meets or the Meet of Champs, according to the Arkansas Activities Association.

"I guess I was just feeling it." said Franklin, who also had a winning toss of 114-1 in the discus. "Everything just worked out. I was on my home turf, so I knew I had to represent. I felt like I had more energy than normal. When we go to other meets, I guess my energy dies by being on the bus.
